FAIRFIELD ENDOWED CHURCH OF ENGLAND (C) JUNIOR SCHOOL

The History of our school

The School has a long history dating back to 1862, when it was situated near St Peter's Church on North Road (now houses). Moving to its present site in 1972, the school was partially rebuilt in 1987. In September 1997, a new building, housing two classrooms was opened.

The first mention of what was previously known as North Road School was in 1662 when Anthony Swann bequeathed £4 a year to teach ten children.  The name or location of this original school is not known but pre-dated North Road School.
In 1862 North Road School was opened but not without some interesting scenes.  The passage below was taken from ‘The Spirit of North Road School – Fairfield’ by David G Owen, copy available to read @ Buxton Library 914.251 and located on http://www.thestensons.co.uk/history-of-fairfield-2/.  Our great thanks.

“This usually quiet village was the scene of great excitement on Tuesday last. Our readers are aware that a new school has been erected, new trustees appointed, and that strenuous exertions have been made to increase the usefulness of the school. But in these alterations most of the parishioners have been under the impression that the clergyman and his party were anxious for more power than was justly due. Much ill feeling has been the result; and on Tuesday last, not being able to get the key, the parishioners took forcible possession of the school by passing a man through the window who then by means of a screwdriver removed the lock. Possession thus obtained was considered a great triumph, and was celebrated by the Buxton Band being engaged to trumpet “The conquering Hero,” through Buxton and Fairfield. A speech was made, Mr Robert Mycock, a trustee of the school, he was chaired through the village, and with native eloquence harangued the multitude. The clergymen and the churchwarden were hooted, a window of the parsonage was broken, and up to a late hour the wildest excitement prevailed”.

Until 1907 & the opening of the new school on what was Queens Road (later sheltered housing), both the infants and juniors of Fairfield were sited at the North Road School.

Fairfield Endowed moved to new buildings in 1972 to serve an expanding housing estate from which it continues to draw most of its pupils.

Thankyou for being part of our history for the future.

(If anyone has any more information regarding North Road School or the opening of our current school in 1972 we would be interested to see this and acknowledge it here.)
