Year 6 Residential Visit to Lea Green

PictureEveryone say, "Cheese!"

On Monday 17th September, Year 6 arrived at school, suitcase ready for their 3 day adventure at Lea Green, near Matlock. The 3 days were action packed with activities such as abseiling, stream walking, rock scrambling and the mighty high ropes! The children all had a fantastic time, learning new skills, conquering fears and having great fun with their friends. They all returned to school with increased confidence and life-long memories.

lAfter the half term break, Year 6 will be studying World War II during their topic lessons. In our literacy lessons we will be studying Friend or Foe by Michael Morpurgo, which follows the story of two evacuees from London. They will be finding out about how and why the war started, key events during the war, the effects of the war at home and abroad as well as the legacy left by the war.

There are some fantastic websites that the children can use to find out about World War II so we have listed a few website links below;

www.primaryhomeworkhelp.co.uk/Britain.html

Books recommended to help the children read around our topic;
Carrie's War by Nina Bawden
Goodnight Mr Tom by Michelle Magorian
Letters from the Lighthouse by Emma Carroll

Friday 7th December 2018 at 2:30pm - Year 6 World War II Curriculum Assembly

 World War 2 Day

In Year 6 we went back in time to 1939 and remembered life during World War II. The  the children all came to school dressed as Evacuees from this era and arrived with their clothes, gas mask boxes and identify labels.  During the course of the day, the children created evacuee labels, a 'make do and mend' Christmas decoration and even took part in taking the 'necessary precautions' before the air-raid siren went off by taping the windows. We all found shelter when the air-raid siren went off!
We finished a very enjoyable day, by sharing what the children have learned in their topic lessons, at a World War II assembly for parents and grandparents.
A huge thank you to all the parents who attended and we hope you took home a few World War facts!!

Spring 1

During Spring 1, Year 6 will be writing non-chronological reports which are non-fiction texts that give information about a particular subject. It is called non-chronological because the information doesn't have to be ordered in the way that things happen. So we will be researching facts about the rainforest, in particular the different layers of the rainforest.
Our class text is Holes by Louis Sachar, a fantastic story about
Stanley Yelnats, a boy who has bad luck due to a curse placed on his great- great-grandfather, is sent to Camp Green Lake, a juvenile detention camp, for a crime he did not commit. Stanley and the other boys at the camp are forced to dig large holes in the dirt every day.

Books recommended this term:
Small Steps by Louis Sachar

Year 6 Animal Vistors!
This week we had some very special visitors in our school. As Year 6 are finding out all about Rainforests, Paton from Zoolab brought in some very exotic animals including a snake, cockroach, gIant land snail, millipede and even a scorpion! We all got a chance to hold the animals (if we wanted to). They felt really weird especially the snakeskin! We found out lots of interesting facts from Paton including the fact that Cockroaches can live up to a week without its head!

Andy Tooze  - Poetry workshop

This week,  the poet Andy Tooze visited FEJS and held some poetry workshops with children in Years 5 and 6.  Andy began by asking us to write 20 words about a subject of our choice. Some of us chose football, some chose animals although one poem was 20 words about lemons!! Then we talked about how we could use a repeating line in a poem. We shared our ideas by doing mini performance and then had an assembly at the end of the day. We had so much fun!

SPRING 2

This term proves to be busy, busy busy with sports competitions, Friendship Week, World Book Day, World Thinking Day as well as science week, when we will be part of a Forensic Science Workshop. Miss Stein kick-started the term with a quiz and this has to be returned no later than Monday 4th March.
We will be continuing our Rainforest topic this term and will investigate the threat to rainforests all over the world, including the Palm Oil industry.
Our class text will be Kensuke's Kingdom; another fantastic book by Michael Morpurgo.
